What a French EPR UIN is, and how to check one
A UIN, or identifiant unique (IDU in French), is the registration number ADEME issues to a producer in SYDEREP, the national register France runs for extended producer responsibility. Article L541-10-13 of the Code de l'environnement requires every producer subject to EPR to register with the administration, which issues the unique identifier, and requires the administration to publish the list of registered producers together with their identifier. The obligation has applied since 1 January 2022. The number is issued per stream, not per company: a lamp with a battery inside, shipped in a cardboard box, is registered three times and holds three UINs.
The format is an ADEME producer number, FR followed by six digits, then an underscore and a six-character stream suffix: FR209351_01KOYY. The producer number stays the same across all of a company's registrations; the suffix changes with the stream. Producers rarely request the number themselves. A producer running an individual system receives it from SYDEREP through its own account; a producer in a collective system receives it from the scheme it joins, once the membership is validated. Either way ADEME is the issuer, and the published register is the only authoritative record of what exists.

The UIN has to appear in your general terms and conditions, or in another contractual document given to the buyer, and on your website. In practice marketplaces enforce it faster than the administration does: under article L541-10-9 a platform takes over the producer obligations of a third-party seller who cannot show it is compliant, so platforms ask for a UIN per stream and suspend listings without one. The statutory penalties sit behind that. Article L541-9-5 allows up to 30,000 euros for failing to register, filing incomplete or inaccurate register data, or omitting the identifier from the mandatory mentions, and up to 7,500 euros per unit or tonne of product left uncovered by a company.
ADEME already publishes a free public search of the register at syderep.ademe.fr, and this page queries the same open data, so a single lookup is not the reason to use it. Two things are. The bulk mode takes 500 rows per file, CSV or Excel in, CSV or Excel out, and returns the matched company, its SIRET, its ADEME producer number, every UIN, every stream and the scheme memberships on record, which is the difference between vetting a supplier list once and never vetting it. And verify mode also queries the removals register, so a withdrawn UIN comes back as removed, with its date and reason, instead of simply not being found.
Two limits are worth stating plainly. A name match is not an identity check: different companies can normalise to the same name, so compare the registration number returned against your own records before trusting the UINs attached to it. And the register is a daily open-data snapshot published by ADEME. It is good evidence of what the register said on a given date, not legal proof that a producer is compliant.
